UNFPA supports the National Youth and Population Forum in the training of youth leaders in Guinea-Bissau

Bissau May 26, 2021 - UNFPA supports the National Youth and Population Forum in the training of 20 Guinea-Bissau youth leaders from 7 health regions of the country (SAB, Tombali, Gabu, Bafata and Bolama Bijagós and Quinara) to support the access of adolescents and young people to information and services on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH).

The opening ceremony was chaired by Baite Badjana, Executive Secretary of the Guinea-Bissau National Youth and Population Forum, in the presence of UNFPA’s Assistant Representative, Dr. Mamadu Jao, and Dr. Mama Mané, Deputy Director of the Directorate for Reproductive Health Services.

Reversing the spread of poverty and HIV/AIDS is a task that is beyond the capabilities of young people, no matter how remarkable or heroic. Because it demands from communities, nations and regions the development of a set of concerted and coordinated actions.” Said Dr. Mamadu Jao, UNFPA Assistant Representative.

The 20 young leaders will have the responsibility to replicate the contents of these trainings in their communities and neighborhoods, thus allowing a considerable number of adolescents and young people to have access to information on Sexual and Reproductive Health and, with particular emphasis on Sexual Education.

In turn, the Executive Secretary of the National Forum of Youth and Population of Guinea-Bissau, Baite Badjana said that “the National Forum of Youth and Population of Guinea-Bissau as a youth institution similar to others in Africa, particularly at the sub- ECOWAS region, has placed the country alongside other members of the community of African nations to face the challenges of achieving the goals of the Millennium Development Challenges.

The training takes place from 26th to 28th May 2021, at the SOS Social Center in Bissau.
